A lot of things could be said in response to the ill tidings that the health care monstrosity has been all but passed, but suffice it to say that this is one of the worst days in the history of American politics in many decades. Probably the only worse day in the last 50 years is the day Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. Some will say that up until this point we were a capitalistic country who largely had free markets and this suddenly has ended all that. They would be wrong; we've been a socialist-lite economy since Roosevelt (and later Johnson) corrupted it with his New Deal. What today marks is the day our freedom was euthanized after decades of life support.
I sense a rebellion growing... a groundswell of outrage that will not soon be quenched. Channeling Pandora, Obama has opened a box that cannot be closed.

I share your pessimism - perhaps more deeply, even. But I don't view it so much as a free country being on life-support, as I do a dead body which has been dead for some time, it's just that the worms have finally gotten to the healthcare industry and began eating it as well. The wealth that America generated in the 19th century has been systematically pillaged and leached over the past hundred years and more. That is, in my view, what government is: it is a growth that sucks the life out of productive, working people, churches, families and businesses. It provides nothing that they could not provide on their own.
This bill is the decay and consumption of yet another vestigial part of what was once a capitalist, freedom-loving country.
Amen Colin. The only political hope is if the states and Supreme Court fight it. Unfortunately, what would remain after the bill is stripped of the unconstitutional stuff would be an even greater monstrosity.
Colin, of course I can agree with most of what you said, but I see it a little differently.
This isn't the day America died. We've been dying for a long time, but we are not yet completely dead yet. We just have terminal freaking cancer.
I hope I am wrong, but I think we are going to see the dollar collapse. When that happens, the "global community" will step in to "help". Then we'll be dead. Like for real. They'll still call us Americans, but we'll actually be global citizens - serfs more like it.
One other thought. Not life support, but euthanasia by chemo overdose.
